Status Quo Ante

Hamamelis x intermedia 'Sunburst' March 10, 2013
Two days late for posting for Bloom Day, but it couldn't be helped. I've been sick, and then it's come in the midst of the St. Patrick's Day Irish dance performance season. (I'm an Irish dance mom; the only way I could be more of one would be if I had a shirt that said "Reel Mom" on it.) In any event, the garden looks much the same as it did in January. The snow has melted from everywhere but in the shadow cast by the south fence and the piles lining the driveway. True, bulbs are sprouting, but the only things blooming are the witch hazel, Hamamelis x intermedia 'Sunburst', and the snowdrops (Galanthus elwesii). There is a crocus in bud, but it's been that way for days, waiting for a return of normal temperatures. There's a low of 12F in the immediate future. So this weird stasis continues, but it is a vast improvement on last year's disastrous March warmth.

As always, thanks goes to Carol of May Dreams Gardens for hosting Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I'm truly enjoying the design and layout of your blog. It's a very easy on the
eyes which makes it much more enjoyable for me to come here
and visit more often. Did you hire out a designer
to create your theme? Superb work!

The witch hazel petals usually curl up onto themselves and hang on to the branches until spring, when they will flutter to the ground. The leaves grow old, dingy and withered, yet they also cling tenaciously to the branches throughout the winter months. It is not until the weather gets warmer that last year's growth will fall from the witch hazel tree branches.

Your witch hazel is beautiful! Glad you were feeling well enough to be able to attend the dance performance. I avoid flying out of O'Hare whenever possible, but these dancers would have put a smile on my face if I had seen them; I'm sure they delighted many a passenger that day.

Sorry you've been under the weather. Fun to see your Irish Dancers!
MMD, you have some determined spammers. If you do comment moderation, they'll go to your e-mail inbox. Blogger catches almost all the spam that way and you can delete it later. If you make us do the word verification (I'm resorting to that for awhile), it really helps!!
