It's sad, but true. The mulch pile is still on the driveway. This must be a new record. It must will be removed before the snow flies. Next spring, please slap me with a fish if I consider ordering 4 yards again. Not that I couldn't use it, it's just that I ended up having to do nearly all of it alone this year. (My Very Indulgent Spouse has finally had it (and understandably so) with my mulching micro-managing and will be referred to henceforth with the sobriquet "Cycling Man.") The other problem was the drought and heat, as there's no point in mulching when the ground has turned to cement. I recall from my undergraduate studies that archaeologists often find ancient brick walls of lost civilizations, and what is brick but clay and straw baked hard.
But I digress. The point is, the three-day long weekend with cooler temperatures and a possibility of rain means that gardening chores may be undertaken with gusto. In addition to the mulching, the fallen tree must be addressed.
(Dear fallen tree, please remove yourself from the premises forthwith.) Navigating a path to the compost bins remains treacherous and taking photos of Tricyrtis 'Tojen' is impossible. Cycling Man's assistance will be required to relocate the logs, as they are too big and heavy for me to maneuver alone.
At some point this fall, I hope to finish expanding the driveway beds and moving the plants in them a bit farther apart to give them breathing room. Only then will I start in on the bulb planting.
What projects do you have planned for this fall?
Have a great weekend, everyone.

Sounds like you have a long list. I sort of run out of steam at this time of year....
My cycling woman feels the same about my mulching/composting projects. ha. This fall I'm continuing a new garden room called the Texas Garden. All with a rust patina. ya..
I don't have a big project this fall. If and when it decided to rain again and soften up the earth I might be inspired. Lucky that you procrastinated, you will have mulch for your expanded beds.
There just always seems to be so much to do in the garden. You seem as if you are getting a lot done even though you have had some delays. I am not sure we will get to everything on our list, but...finish digging and installing the patio underneath the deck...finish new perennial bed, fruit tree and berry patch... mulch new perennial bed, fruit tree and berry patch...prepare the garden beds for fall...finish planting fall crops...replace old compost bins with new ones...move some roses and perennials to new spots...I'll stop there...just too much...whew!
ahh yes... I feel your pain with ever present mulch (or soil) on the driveway. i wish it could just put itself away!
I have a pretty long list. There are perennials to move, bulbs to plant, geraniums to pot up and move indoors, cuttings to take, new beds to prepare for next spring. . .
I have made the mistake in the past of just quitting when fall came, and it just created a lot of extra work when spring came. Also, I was always fighting the feeling of behind.
I still have one bag of mulch sitting in my driveway, much to my husband's chagrin!
Above post should read "always fighting the feeling of *being* behind!" Sorry!
I just started using the bagged mulch, Easier to move around the yard. And my experiences with having hauled to your driveway were not positive.Unless you spread out quickly or keep it covered, it begins to break down and rot in pockets and smell. While I admire those who do it in bulk but it's not for me.
I'm with Janet. I run out of steam, too, at this time of year. Lots of deadheading and maintenance. But my enthusiasm wanes a bit. This would be a good entry for the "Garden Lesssons Learned" meme at http://bit.ly/oV7By4. Happy fall!
I was too lazy to order mulch this year... but when I do order it, I often have a pile through more of the summer than I care to admit! (I've taken to having it dumped in the back, inside the fence, so the neighbors can only see it from their upper windows. :)
I have LOTS of cleanup to do, too, both in the yard and in the house. I've decided that I need to be more zen and get rid of a bunch of my "stuff" this fall.
Ha, ha, I can understand the never-diminishing pile of compost on the driveway:) Beckie and I recently vowed we won't let each other buy so many annuals next year--all we've done the past month or two is water, water, and water. I have a long list of fall chores and unfinished projects to do, too. I'm hoping these cooler temperatures will re-charge me and get me motivated to finally start some of them.
I have a few BIG projects to get to~Now that it's raining I can think about fall planting and then move those boulders from my neighbors yard.
I love your Greenwoman sculpture! gail
My project for the fall is to reclaim The Potager. The surrounding field has seriously encroached. I also have learn how to manage black raspberries. They are out of control and grow so differently from red raspberries. I don't know what to do.
Excellent overview, it pointed me out something I didn’t realize before. I should encourage for your wonderful work. I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well. Thank you for sharing this information with us.****************
