Catching Up With...

Barbara Wetzel's prairie, Barrington Hills, IL
Dear gardening friends,

It feels as if I've hardly been home this past month, between feisanna (Irish dance competitions) weekends in Milwaukee, the Fling in Seattle, and a waterpark family vacation in Gurnee, Illinois. I'm trying to catch my breath before heading to Indianapolis for the Garden Writers' symposium. On Friday, Helen Yoest, of Gardening with Confidence, made the trek to Squirrelhaven to see me, and then I took her to see the garden of Barbara Wetzel, which I visited with the girl back in May. I wanted to see Barbara's prairie in full bloom, but mostly I just wanted Helen to see it. It was a wonderful visit, which I will elaborate on in another post. Right now, I'm squishing Japanese beetles, pulling weeds, and making a headband to go with the girl's Irish dance solo dress, which she will wear for the first time next weekend. Shopping for school supplies is also on the agenda for this week. Busy, exciting times here. I hope summer is treating you well.

Happy gardening,

Mr. McGregor's Daughter

P.S. Here's my first post at Native Plants & Wildlife Gardens, on my Asclepias purpurascens.

Dear MMD, Summer has been.....interesting! Intense heat, humidity and high temperatures with the added insult of mosquitoes. It was interrupted by a week of laughter, garden tours, hanging out with good friends and cool weather with NO bugs. Over all it's been a pretty good summer~Of course, I am in good spirits since the rains returned. Have fun preparing for school; it's a pain but, so worth it when they head out the door for that first day of school and you can smile knowing you have a few free hours to yourself. Warmest, Gail PS I prefer to drown JB

It was such a good visit, Barbara. I'm thrilled it worked out I could visit with you and see Squirrel Haven. It will stay in my fond memory back for some time. Also, thanks for the intro to Barbara Wetzel's garden. Oh my!

I had to laugh at "squishing Japanese Beetles" I guess these thugs are everywhere. I just cut off all of my rose flowers, but left the buds. I don't want them to enjoy the roses if I can't.

I never squished a JB, but they are certainly unwelcome. The little devils are breeding right in front of me too. You really have quite the schedule. I bet you will be happy to slow down a bit when that time rolls around.
