Bloom Day January 2011

Oxalis triangularis subsp. papilionaceae 'Atropurpurea' a/k/a Oxalis regnellii
Welcome to the first Bloom Day of the new year.  Bloom Day is the monthly showing of what's happening (or not happening) in the garden that Carol, of May Dreams Gardens, hosts.  As there is snow on the ground and the temperatures have been in the 20sF/-6C all week, nothing visible is happening out in the garden.  Thank goodness for oxalis, which has been blooming continuously inside.  The above image might be my entry in this month's Gardening Gone Wild photo contest, Macro in a Mason Jar, judged by photographer/philosopher David Perry.  I say might, because it's not exactly what I wanted to do, but I've lost my point and shoot camera (it's somewhere in the house).  If I find it before the deadline, I'll do a better image.  This image was shot with my DSLR, for which I do not have a macro lens.

Happy Bloom Day!

I did a post before GBBD on trying out this technique for the contest too. I like how the flower petals appear to be floating in water.

I had some oxalis as few years ago. I wonder what happened to it? Did it succumb to "neglectful gardener syndrome"? Or is it lost in my house? I'll have to figure that out!

Thanks for joining in for bloom day!

That is a wonderful entry image. I hope you win. The mason jar technique looks like a fun way to capture just about anything that will fit inside.

It's a nice picture! I think I have those same glass beads as the "soil" for my bromeliads. Happy Bloom Day!

I love the little oxalis flowers~I completely forgot I have one blooming in the house! It's lucky to have survived my neglect. I know you're having fun with this D Perry 'assignment'! gail

Lovely. I'm appalling at keeping anything other than Spring seedlings alive in the house, so no indoor flowers for me!

My Thanksgiving cactus is blooming again, otherwise all my blooms would be "store-bought".

Well, good for you. I've never had much luck with oxalis. Cool image!

Oh yes, I just love these little beauties. I want to track down one for my indoor garden. Happy GBBD.

Happy Bloom Day MMD! I hope the snow melts and then you get more. I know you need the snow cover for your garden. It's a pretty day here today.~~Dee

Now I'm singing Oxalis to the tune of Volaré... and thinking about Mason jars. Thanks for the inspiration and info, and Happy Blooms Day.

That's really beautiful, Barbara! I've got Oxalis here, too. Most of them are in storage for the winter (a couple different ones) and one is in a planter with some ornamental grass in the conservatory. It's bloomed off and on this winter, but it's off right now.

MMD - Love that Oxalis. I have a few outside in the summer, but they are all long gone now. Nice that you have a reliable bloomer inside in this weather. How are you recuperating? Hope you're a little mobile by now. Happy GBBD!

A very nice blend of memes MMD :)

You asked about the snowdrop count over at mine. I simply count all the flowers which have got past the 'encased in green' stage. Thus the number you can see in my photo is 15. The rest are promises of the counts to come in future weeks and there's hundreds of them :)

Hope that helps!

Haven't gotten around to playing with mason jars this year, but I LOVE what you've done with this, Barbara! Hope the leg is doing okay...

Thanks, everyone for your kind words. For those of you who have killed or can't grow oxalis, I suspect you're watering it too much. I forget to water mine for a couple of weeks, and it still keeps blooming, so drier is better for them. I'm still off my foot, and it isn't healing as quickly as I'd like.

It turned out great...with or without the point 'n shoot. You didn't use a large macro lens so I don't see any problem at all. You always come up with the winners;-)
