October Crept In

Cornus alternifolia 'W. Stackman' (Golden Shadows™)
There was no frost this morning, despite last night's advisories.  Each day of October without frost is gift to the garden.  It's also a reprieve for the gardener; I haven't potted up and brought in the duranta.  The fuschia is still sitting out in the garden, but it's back in full bloom, enjoying the cooler weather.  I guess I'll just have to start schlepping it in and out now.  Nearly everything that has to go in the ground is now in the ground, although I picked up another Hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears' on deep discount today.  I'll find a home for it somewhere.  There is only one plant left still to bloom here at Squirrelhaven, the Korean mum.

It seems like I have less and less time to spend in the garden these days, even as the garden chores pile up.  At least I can enjoy the beauty of the colors of the fall garden as I glance out the window, or pull into the garage.

The foliage of the 'Cobra' Lily has turned yellow, the first of all the lilies here.

Sorry, I just can't resist one more cabbage shot.

Soon my bulbs will arrive, and then the fun really begins.

Hi MMD, My bulbs have arrived, sitting in the garage. But, I have ordered two more groups of bulbs, daylilies and perennials. Yikes, I'll be planting until December.

Yes, how is it suddenly October? I'm starting to see some fall leaf color here in my garden, too. Some deep purples, a hint of red, lots of gold, even brown, and like you I could use way more time in my garden! Way more...

What happened to September! I feel rushed all the time to get these chores done before a big freeze; I've even ordered myself not to buy anything else~sale or not! Love the cabbages~and the yellowing leaves of your other plants. gail

Most of my bulbs are sitting in the garage, waiting for the cool temps to get the ground sufficiently cooled down. Love your foliage and the cabbage!

I hope you get some time to enjoy in the garden soon and may the first frost hold off a little longer!

I am also enjoying the cooler weather. Our ground is so hard from the drought I am not too inspired to plant anything this fall. I will have to catch up next spring.

We had our first frost Saturday night, and the colors seem to be changing by the minute. Now we are getting a week of Indian summer, which is the best part about October.

Still so pretty!

And please don't feel you must acknowledge my comment. I don't always comment when I visit; and I'm happy to leave a note when I do. Hope your hand heals quickly.

It's so much fun to read your blog and feel like I am getting a taste of Chicago is like right now. We're cooling off, too, but a still couple or three of weeks away from frost, I think.

Love that Cornus. Even the leaves of plain ole redtwig are pretty nice.

I never get tired of the cabbage photos ! The rain has been keeping me from falls last chores - 3 days now.

Are you into cabbages? I am so into cabbages and kale this year. Hopefully my babies will make it into adulthood before bad weather hits. Love your blue photo. And of course your other two photos are equally as nice. Happy autumn.

Fall weather sure came quickly didn't it?

No frost here yet, thank goodness! But I'm getting nervous, and have much to do before it arrives. Still, my own rules say that I cannot plant my bulbs till it's more frosty! And let's not even talk about winter!

Lovely autumn colours! No frost here either, and I felt a right idiot bubble-wrapping the greenhouse in 17C (63F), but knew I wouldn't have time for weeks if I didn't get it done. So easy to get overwhelmed by all the chores that need doing, but thank you for reminding me to remember to stop and look around and enjoy the glorious colours - and for sharing yours!

It seems that this summer (past) has gone so quickly... we've been so busy, that I've missed it. Now it's fall, and I think I'm feeling a bit peevish about the entire situation. I need to get out and rake tomorrow... but I don't exactly want to. I feel the need to do some sort of exploring, instead!

The leaves will be there Friday a.m., too. :-)

We've had a light frost two mornings, but so far it hasn't affected anything in the garden, which is good, because I've been such a procrastinator about bringing things in. I'm loving these October days, too.

The last photo is a beauty!
