10/10/10 -Becoming the Greenwoman

10/10/10 sounds like the scores at a diving competition back when the judges held up scorecards, the perfect 10.  So in honor of the date, I'm unveiling my new garden sculpture.  Is it a perfect 10?  It's hard to judge one's own work, as I see all the flaws and imperfections, but seeing it in the garden, it's as close to perfect as can be.

It's not completely finished, it needs a bit of sanding and polishing.

The welding marks will fade, the metal will rust, and the vision will be complete.

I was inspired by Bernini's "Apollo and Daphne" at the Borghese Museum in Rome, but instead of Daphne fleeing something, she's joyfully becoming an oak tree, turning into the Greenwoman.

So I've combined Greek and Celtic mythology (the Green Man) to find a deeper meaning about the interconnectedness of life, the joy of plants and gardens, and becoming one with the planet.

I think it is a perfect 10, and thus this is the perfect day to unveil it, at the perfect time of 10:10.

Well done!

How satisfying to have one's own art in one's own garden. I am a teensy bit envious.

What a great sculpture! I love the reference to Greek mythology. You should be very proud!

That's really wonderful! There was a "tree girl" sculpture at the Meijer Gardens that I also found very appealing, on a visceral level. You should be very proud of your work!

What a fantastic job you've done, MMD! She's beautiful! And I agree, she doesn't look like Daphne fleeing at all; she looks as though she is ready to embrace the oak tree. Wish we were able to get WICU--good luck with your unveiling!

Cool, this looks like such a fun hobby. I like how her outstretched hands are becoming branches.

Love her! Can't wait to see how she looks once she's mellowed and rusted a little... If I was rich, I'd totally hire you to do a sculpture for my garden.

How fabulous to be able to create art for your own garden. I love the "becoming" and the myth combination.

She is just beautiful. You have more than green fingers! Chicago WICU TV is lucky!

Thanks, everyone. It's surprised me how easy this has to come to me (especially considering I've never taken at art class). It makes me think anyone can do the same if they look to their garden for inspiration and they design a piece for a specific situation in their garden.

Way to go, MMD! This is wonderful and very meaningful! Watch out - you may find yourself taking orders!

(How does one get on Chicago tv?) :-) Congratulations!!

I love the idea behind your sculpture. A woman becoming a tree - interesting you thought to use the idea of acorns rather than bark. It is like a new beginning for your woman, not necessarily an old withered end.
