During a 3.5" rain event, through the window on May 13, 2010
It's been raining a lot recently. Not just here in Chicagoland, but in Davis, California, at Leslie's place, in Idaho (Gardens of the Wild, Wild West), in Indiana at May Dreams Gardens, in Raleigh, where Helen Yoest gardens, in Oklahoma, where Dee has had tornadoes and hail, in Nashville, where Clay and Limestone nearly became flood and mud. Even Houston's gotten in on a bit of rain at My Corner of Katy and Nancy's Garden Spot.
I like raindrops better than dew drops. There's something about the ponderousness of the drops that creates garden magic. Not every plant is a good rainy day plant. The Lavender does nothing for me right now. But grassy things,

including the foliage of Allium sphaerocephalon, below,
Rounder foliage also looks good with raindrops.
Alchemilla mollis (lady's mantle), which is second only to Sedum,
here Sedum/Hylotelephium 'Matrona,' for raindrop holding quality.
Other good foliage plants include:
Hellebores,
Hostas
Aquilegia, and Peonies.

As the above photo shows, buds can also show off raindrops beautifully.

While rain makes a mush of the Peony flowers, it's stunning on the buds. Other good buds for rain include Maianthemum racemosum/Smilacina racemosa and Clematis.
There are blooms that looks lovely in the rain, such as Aquilegias

Thalictrum/Anemonella thalictroides:

and Trillium grandiflorum.

And let's not forget about seedheads.

Pulsatilla vulgaris
There can even be beauty in decay:

Sing with me:
Raindrops keep falling on my head. But there's one thing I know, the blues they sent to meet me won't defeat me. It won't be long 'til happiness steps up to greet me. Raindrops keep falling on my head. But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red, crying's not for me, cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complaining. Because I'm free. Nothing's worrying me.

What are your favorite rainy day plants?

You picutred most of my favorites. It looks like you made the best out of your rainy days.
I love peony buds and sedums best in the rain. Iris on the other hand look as bad as peony blooms~mush! gail ps This was a brilliant post!
It's raining everywhere but here. All the lovely rain is going just south of us and we get only the gloomy skies and wind. Even our usual Memorial Day storm is not in the forecast this year.
Marnie
pps Thank you for the shout out!
Rain? We've got snow here. That means cold, wet weather will be coming your way, too.
It sure look like I missed a good photo op! I should get out after the rain and do what you did. Your photos are gorgeous!
A friend in high school had a car with no radio. But she did have this silly thing she hung from her rear view mirror that played the elevator music version of "Raindrops..."
I'm undecided if my current flash backs are good or not so good. lol
H.
P.S. Thanks for the shout out!
Oh, I do love this post! Beautiful photos - I always move plants in the rain, nothing has to be watered in :)
I can't even begin to choose a favorite photo! You have taken a lot of lovely shots. I suppose soon we will be wishing for rain but right now...not.
I had never considered peony buds. Alchemilla is pretty famous for holding drops, but I was astonished to find them beat out by sedum. Thanks for making me look--and relook.
I would have to say roses and grasses are my favorite raindrops bearers. Your photos always make me want to plant one more thing. :) Thank you so much for the link love. It is a beautiful respite coming here MMD.
We're supposed to have sunny weather all week, and it's supposed to get warm. I'm sending some of that warmth to you.~~Dee
Ahh, raindrops, lovely raindrops. I will have to go out to take some pictures during our next rainy day!
(hope we get some soon!)
Well you had fun with the rain, didn't you! Your photos are getting better all the time.
Beautiful photos, MMD! Have a great day - I believe it's supposed to rain here soon (tomorrow?).
Beautiful pictures! I love rain on the peony buds but hate what it does to the flowers. Earlier this spring I really enjoyed the raindrops on some daylily foliage.
Oh WOW... what a great post! Next time we get one of those heavy rains, I need to go out and check the sedums--I honestly never would have thought that they were so rain-genic. :)
Thanks for putting that song in my head...could you send some rain to Austin? I really enjoy the way rain looks on ocotillo! Your photos are wonderful!
I so agree with you. Here in CA noone dares to leave their lair when it rains, and they all miss so much.
Love the seedhead photo!
tell me about it. I've never known so much rain in May here before. But your photos almost make it worth it ...
Absolutely gorgeous! Your photography is stunning, MMD. I was singing the rainy day blues last weekend, but now that the sun is out in full force, I'm actually forced to water my plants before they wilt in this heat.
Peony bud is my favorite; love how the drops cling to the round form! And thanks for the Paul Newman memories.
Thanks, Gail, I did take a photo of a wet Iris bloom with the top collapsed. Not pretty.
Marnie - they put rain back in the forecast for Memorial Day, so you might get something.
Susan - I would welcome cool weather after the 90s.
Helen - you've made me remember that I really don't like that song. LOL.
Dee - Noooo! No more warmth!
Conscious Gardener - sorry about the earworm. The only other rain song I could think of was Stevie Ray Vaughn's "The Sky is Crying" but it didn't fit my mood.
Ms. Wis. - I remember going to see "Butch Cassidy" in the movie theater, but I haven't seen it since. I think it's time for another viewing. Paul Newman was great.
