Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone, unless you do it in a Blues song. Or, as Bleeding Gums Murphy said, "The blues isn't about making yourself feel better. It's about making other people feel worse."
I was waiting and waiting
for Dicentra culcullaria to send up a flower.
In Madison, Wisconsin* they were blooming with power.
I was surprised. Got a question in my head.
A good look left me crying
Cause the buds had shriveled and were dead.
I got The Blues,
No Dutchman's Breeches for me.
Now the redbuds are blooming, all around about.
But my Cercis canadensis is only leafing out.
I got The Blues.
No redbuds for me.
In Indiana†, the double bloodroots are in bloom,
and in Upstate New York^, they're blooming there too.
Mine finally sprouted, with only a leaf.
There's no sign of buds, and I'm feeling such grief.
I got The Blues.
No double bloodroot for me.
The April rains won't come
the ground's full of cracks.
And my poor little primrose
ain't never coming back.
I got The Blues.
No primrose for me.
Now the cottonwood tree
is raining sticky stuff on down.
I got no time to weed
got to pick it up off the ground.
I got The Blues.
Sticky stuff for my shoes.
the Brunneras too,
but somethings still missing,
and I still got them Blues.
The Squirrelhaven Springtime Blues.
Oh, yeah.
Anything in your springtime garden giving you the Blues?

Oh, honey, I'm really sorry you're singing the blues today. You have some pretty blue flowers as accompaniment though. Hang in there. Better days are ahead~~Dee.
Mercy, child, I got them blues my own self. My Heritage rose doesn't know it's supposed to be pink ... there's a yellow iris blooming where only purples and blues are intended ... the summer weeds are coming on strong even as the winter weeds linger ... you get the picture.
My Erythronium dens canis bulbs look set to skip flowering altogether. There's no buds at all, and even though I like the foliage it's not really enough for me.
Very creative!
Chase those blues away with bright flowers & sunny days!
Oh how sad! I wonder what happened to your redbud? Ours is having a banner year! I am a little blue about all the woodland plants I put in last fall; none of them came up. And I lost two shasta daisies, which puts a big dent in my plan of having a glorious patch of salvia and daisies by the garage. (Hmm, maybe that's why I never bother making garden plans!)
Your photo of those tiny little Brunnera flowers is so much better than mine. All are beautiful!
MMD, I got quite a chuckle from your rendition of the 'Blues'. I am sorry however that you didn't get all the blooms you were longing for. I can't imagine what's going on as we have had heat and dry and still our trees here have had a banner year of blooms.
The blue bloomers that you do have are gorgeous though. Maybe summer will bring you just what you want in your gardens. :)
Cute post! I'm understanding the reason for "the blues," but aren't you fortunate that you have Those Blues? ;-) What beautiful photos you have taken! Frame-able?
So far, I'm just happy to see what I see. There are a few things that haven't returned in full force, but I'm keeping busy.
Would you like to know that I used post hole diggers today?? More about That later! :-)
Dear MMD, What an imaginative posting but, oh, how depressing for you to wait so long only to witness that your precious blooms will not now come for another year. I do feel for you and can only suggest that you take joy in those plants that are surviving and doing well.
Spring can indeed be such a fickle month and in many ways that is why I enjoy my Alpine House so much at this time of year since whatever the weather, conditions can be controlled for the treasures inside.
I love the BG's quote...I can see him with Lisa S right now wailing away on their saxes singing along with you~~I had one bloom on the Dutchman's Breeches and the squirrels or some other creature bit the blooms off two of the Golden Lights azaleas! On the other hand your blue flowers are delightful~~gail
It has been hot and dry here too. What has bloomed hasn't lasted as long as it normally does. The winter weeds are hanging on for dear life. It can be a sad thing. I hope the cold front comes in and delivers some rain and you get a new lease on spring.
I hear you. No rain here, at least the heat has slacked off a bit. My Dicentra has a few stunted blooms, so disappointing. Even under heavy leaf mulch the ground is too dry in my woodland garden.
Marnie
I'm so sorry to hear that the blooms you were expecting haven't come. That just really sucks, or sings the blues as you so eloquently put it. We've had similar weather (in fact, the rain we waited for all weekend never came) but at least most of what I expected to bloom, has. Here's hoping you get some relief soon.
The weather is all that is giving me the blues. Nothing blooming but a few daffs.
Boo-hoo ... didn't see my Bloodroot either :( But I got the blues :)
I'm sorry about the heat and lack of rain. Most years I'd be right there with you, but Austin is enjoying a prolonged cool and rainy spring this year. But at any rate, your images sure are pretty!
Dee - I do feel better, now I've written a really bad song about it.
Cindy - plants have a way of thwarting are plans, but maybe that group of purple & blue needed a shot of yellow?
ROR - I wish I could advise you on them, but some of mine don't bloom either. I'm going to divide the non-bloomers & put some in another place.
Rachel - thanks!
Carol - there's rain in the forecast finally, and I love a rainy night.
Diane - I'm hoping my redbud is too young, not that it's in too much shade. Plans don't mean much to plants. There must be a gardening Murphy's law about what happens when you plant in groups of 3.
Hi, Erin - Brunnera blooms are tricky to photograph. That's why I love digital cameras, lots of deleted attempts.
Beckie - too much to ask. Last summer brought me what I wanted. Can't expect a repeat.
Shady - I've heard of people using post hole diggers for planting purposes. I'm intrigued.
Edith - oh, for an Alpine House! I really can't complain, as other things are starting to bloom to make me forget about the missing flowers. I don't want to jinx it by mentioning the name of the plant.
Gail - I haven't used a Simpsons reference in a while. My sympathies on the squirrel troubles.
Lisa - it's getting hard to keep up with the weeds, huh?
Marnie - we're in the same boat, sadly.
Jean - I hope you get some rain too.
Commweeder - thank good for daffodils.
Joey - sorry about your bloodroot. We'll have to pamper them with compost & extra water this summer.
Pam - thanks! So that's where my rain is.
I hear you, MMD, and even without singing it, your lyrics are resonating with us. I don't have any spring ephemerals to cry about, but what is blooming here is almost as ephemeral. The warm weather caused everything to bloom early, but then they were gone almost as quickly. You do have some beautiful blue blooms, though, to console you. Rain is in the forecast for the weekend; let's keep our fingers crossed.
