I decided to take advantage of the Coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) and sculpture in the front garden for my entry in this month's Picture This photo contest at Gardening Gone Wild. I was intrigued by the ripples on the surface of the snow as well as the shadows. I must admit, it's getting more difficult to become inspired by winter. I've had enough of it for the year, but I don't think it's had enough yet.

Glad you got out and got a nice shot, MMD :-) Love how the coneflowers stand up in spite of what winter throws at us. I'm ready for winter to lighten its grip on us too, but I think you're quite right that it's not ready to quit us just yet.
I love the picture but I hope winter decides to depart sooner rather than later.
Nice shot! I agree that unfortunately winter doesn't seem to be over. More snow to come this week...
Love the shadows here, MMD! The seed heads are very artful, perfect for the assignment this month. Good luck! :-)
Frances
Before I even read your commentary, I thought to myself, "Those ripples are cool." Pretty shadows, MMD! Good luck in the contest!
I was struck by the sastrugi in the photo as well as the shadows MrMcD. Don't you just love that word sastrugi?? I just learned that word this winter and this is the first time I have been able to use it.
This is one of the best ones I have seen for Winter's Light.
I love the play of shadows here, MMD. Coneflowers have always been one of my very favorite flowers, and their winter interest adds even more to their resume. As much as I have enjoyed everyone's winter scenes, I'm getting tired of snow and cold, too. I just saw the forecast for March 1 is more snow!
Saw your link on GGW and just wanted to drop by to tell you how much I like this shot. It follows the submission guidelines to the letter. Nice job.d
MMD, I think this photo is indeed inspired. The pale winter light casts long shadows on even the bareset of landscapes, but with the coneflowers still standing tall the shadows are put to good use.
May I have your autograph? This is a great photo, MMD! Hope you enlarge it or use it in some way. :-) Yes... we're getting a LOT of new snow today. I assume you are as well?
Good luck MMD~It's a great shot and I can imagine how cold it is! gail
Lovely shot... and I like how you framed/cropped it, too. :)
The intricate design of shadow on that pure white is lovely.
I have almost nothing left standing in my garden. The weight of the snows has taken every stalk to the ground a buried it. Even teh roses and many of the shrubs are down.
Marnie
love it! that's a fabulous pic.
I really like the circular shadows amongst all of the linear ones - draws your eye to the upper part of the photo. Captures winter light very nicely. Let's hope any further snow decides to hold off and head north instead (sorry to all you northern gardeners!).
Jodi - the Coneflowers are such a dilemma for me. I like the winter interest, but they seed about like crazy, especially in the front garden. In years past, I cut them down, but for some reason, I decided to leave a few this year.
Cindy - Woodstock Willie didn't see his shadow, but really, why would I believe an overgrown rodent?
ROR - remember last April? I wish I didn't. The snow shovels will not be put away until May.
Thanks, Frances!
Kylee - the ripples sort of remind me of sand dunes, which makes the photo more poignant for me.
Lisa - "sastrugi" is a new word to me, had to look it up. It's kind of depressing to apply to my garden a word used by Shackleton in Antarctica.
Thanks, Darla, I almost didn't enter this month.
Rose - I hate snow in March.
Thanks, Kelly - I guess I'm finally learning how to follow rules.
Beckie - the long shadows of winter have cast my spirit into darkness. Sorry, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I have grown winter weary.
Shady - I'm blushing. I'm not sure I want a winter photo hanging on my wall. Or maybe I do, to look at when it's 95F with 90% humidity.
Gail - I'm really hoping that the worst of the cold is behind us. I've gotten used to 1 pair of socks & pants again.
Blackswamp Girl - thanks.
Marnie - this last snow has really squashed things. If it wasn't for the sculpture, the little bluestem would be on the ground.
DGG - thanks!
GJ - I left my circle scupture in the front garden temporarily for the winter, so this was really serendipitous.
Congrats on your honorable mention!
Well worth it.
I'm glad I noticed Darla's congratulations on your honorable mention. That is a lovely photo. I hope that snow melts soon.
Congratulations on your Honorable Mention, MMD!
A superb photo. If I'd been the judge it would have got more than an honourable mention ...
Thanks, everyone!
