The Great Houseplant Census of 2010

Welcome to the Great Houseplant Census of 2010.* The impetus behind the census is that one evening, my Very Indulgent Spouse (VIS) looked around the kitchen and family room and commented, "Wow, you have a lot of houseplants." I denied it immediately, and reminded him of how I've been frequently guilty of the involuntary plantslaughter of houseplants. For contrast, I described to him Elizabeth Licata's "plant room." VIS asked how many plants she has, which got me wondering how many houseplants everyone has. It also made me realize that I had no idea how many indoor plants I have. And so, the plant census was born.

The definition of "houseplant" that I choose is very broad: any plant indoors now that is alive. This includes not only traditional houseplants, but plants brought inside for the winter, forced bulbs, holiday gift plants, seedlings and so on.

Despite my record of dead plants, I'm doing surprisingly well at keeping plants alive this winter. First, the saddest of the sad, the African Violets and a Kalanchoe.

The Kalachoe has been in the house for a year, the African Violets a few months (the other two African Violets look just as pathetic). Count so far, 4.
Here's a much happier group:
One very large Pelargonium given to me during the summer of 2008 by a friend who had it in her bathroom, but didn't want it anymore; one Coleus grown from a cutting taken last fall; two Oxalis which were divisions of a plant grown in a container outdoors last summer, one of which is in bloom (shock, amazement) one in bud; one Fuchsia grown in the garden last summer brought indoors and potted up. It also, amazingly, has buds. In the lantern is one of the sad little African Violets which has already been accounted for. So that's five more for a total of 9.

Next group:
One Amaryllis in full bloom, and two Cacti that VIS gave me 15 years ago. Yes, I can grow Cacti! Running total: an even dozen.

Finally, one pot of forced bulbs. I could count that as one, but the pot contains three 'Lydia' Tulips and one 'Blue Jacket' Hyacinth, so I'm counting that as a total of 4 plants.

Grand total = 15 indoor plants, a huge increase from the mere two I had two years ago.
So, how many indoor plants do you have?

*You can either just leave the number in a comment, or, you can post about your indoor plants. Consequently, I decided not to do Mr. Linky. Instead, leave a direct link in a comment. Here's how:

I have four...indestructible as need be for someone who routinely forgets to care for them. Let me brag~I do have a 30 year old Philodendron that's about 4 foot tall. Not sure how it's managed to live! gail

I love that combination of amaryllis and cactus! My total is 86; here's my post: McC Houseplant Census

Rose said...

Let's hope the Federal Census is as efficient as yours, MMD! It doesn't take long to tally mine up--13. That doesn't count the poinsettia I finally threw on the compost heap or one forced bulb that looks reluctant to bloom. Most of mine are plants I'm trying overwinter or a few forced bulbs. Houseplants and I still don't get along too well.

Greensparrow said...

Oh goodness... I got to 70 and stopped counting. And I've always thought of myself as not being much of a house plant person! The addiction, the addiction!

Tina said...

There's no counting in this house - I have hundreds. If the hubs knew what I was doing, he would be much too quick to jump to the oft repeated "See, you have too many plants!" outburst.

sweet bay said...

The Amaryllis are beautiful. No houseplants at all, except for the Christmas cactus that are inside because of the cold. They spend most of the winter outside though.

heen Yoest @ Gardening With Confidence™ said...

I don't know why, but I am very much surprised you number is less than mine. I have 25, but only stay inside year round.

mr_subjunctive said...

822. Not counting some seedlings, unrooted cuttings, and other plant material which may or may not make it.

If I'd known about this earlier, I could have built a post around it for PATSP. Next year, maybe.

Hi MMD! I just counted for the first time, and found 50! My newest one is a beautiful sansevieria. I'm not sure I'll get a post made in time for today... but perhaps I'll be a "Shady-come-lately?" :-)

OK, I don't know why my first comment didn't work, but here's my post. I'm just putting in the link because I'm afraid my attempt at html code might have been part of the problem! http://rambleonrose-rr.blogspot.com/2010/02/houseplants-revisited.html

Your VIS thinks 15 is "a lot"? huh. It's confession time over at Blithewold. I posted about scale - if you have houseplants (at home I have 85+) you probably have scale too... Thanks for another great meme!

Mr. McGregor's Daughter said...

Gail - maybe we should have a contest for oldest indoor plant - 30 years is awesome. Are you sure it isn't plastic? ;^)

Diane - impressive number! I'm feeling smugger already. Thanks for joining in.

Rose - according to my calculations, you have 14, not 13. I never said it had to bloom or even look healthy.

Greensparrow - come on, you can count them all, don't you really want to know?

Tina - I promise I won't tell, just whisper me the number.

Sweet Bay - Christmas cactus counts.

Helen - if you only knew my history with houseplants - it's a sad and sordid tale of death and destruction.

Mr. Subjunctive - congratulations, you are the front runner! Do you use a machete to get to the front door?

Shady - there's no time limit, "now" means whenever you feel like it, but not last week, or last month, or last year. 50 is a nice round number.

ROR - Thanks for joining in. I'll put your link
here

Kris - at the moment, the only scale here at Squirrelhaven is outside, on the Magnolia. 85 is great.

Leslie said...

I counted mine and posted at Growing A Garden In Davis

mr_subjunctive said...

No machetes, yet, but I do have to have spreadsheets. Otherwise I forget to water stuff.

Jan (Thanks For Today) said...

I have limited my indoor plants due to our cat, who likes to eat them. That wouldn't be too awfully bad, except for the fact that he throws up afterwards and it's just not worth the hassle, in my mind.

Last winter I broke my own rule and added a bunch of flowering plants to my home. I had to place them where the kitty cannot get to them--and in most of those places there just is not enough sunlight.
Therefore, several didn't make it into this year.

So as of today, my count right now is FIVE houseplants (none of which are flowering), and TWO forced bulb plants (Paperwhites and Amaryliss)--for a total of SEVEN.

PS Just want to remind you about my garden bloggers sustainable living project...and give away! I hope you will participate!

Mr. Subjunctive - I have a measely 15 plants, and I forget to water. I doubt a spreadsheet would help me, though.

Four total, but 2 are half dead.

Ellie Mae's Cottage said...

I've got 28. Which includes 7 forced bulbs (2 amarylis plants and one glass container that has 4 paperwhites). I had a lovely mandevilla that I was trying to over winter but is now down to one little vine... it looks so bad I put it in the garage by the window. I water it periodically in hopes that the roots will survive at least until spring. I'm really enjoying your blog! I just found it! :)

Monica the Garden Faerie said...

Cool idea! Although I have nothing against houseplants, I'm just not abig keeper of them myself. So little so that instead of doing a post, I'll report the number here: 13.5 (the helf is an African violet that is dying). Of these, 9 are plants that I put outside over summer and am really only overwintering inside (rosemary, garlic chives, elephant ears, 2 amaryllises, a paperwhite, a nandina baby shrub not hardy in my zone, and 2 Norfolk Island pines).

Tina said...

Alrighty, then - I did a post :)

I don't consider my seedlings houseplants, they are plant guests, lol. My houseplants are plants I 'try' to keep alive year round. I have a total of 3!!! Pretty sad I know.

Blackswamp_Girl said...

Only 15? And VIS thinks you have a problem?!?!!! *GRIN*

By the way, that African violet looks good compared to the way they look when I get done with them. I don't even try with them anymore... :)

Lisa at Greenbow said...

I didn't realize I had so many house plants until I listed each one. They must be tough to survive here. I can't do African violets. Mine never look as good as yours does here so you can imagine what I do to them.

Anna Flowergardengirl™ said...

I only have 1--but but but let me explain!! It's cause my outdoor planting season is so long and labor intensive that when I come in for a winter break...I do not want to see another plant. And even during winter I'm not quite done outside. My one indoor plant is a Christmas cactus.

Liz said...

As strange as it may sound, I generally don't like indoor plants... Most of mine were always bought by other people, assuming I would automatically like them!!

So as a result I have 5, Cyclamen, Peace Lily (neither I want, but I cannot bring myself to throw them away) and three Orchids (which were bought by me and will stay).

I managed to somehow kill a bonsai, and feel really bad as it must've been around 15/20 years old.

My brother has some bamboo in a vase and a bonasi of his own too.

Anna said...

I have very few MMD as I usually polish them off. The present count stands at five - one African violet, two orchids and two amaryllises. Your amaryllis is a beauty - do you know its name?

ChickenFreak said...

I have: Two. And as I was just mentioning elseblog, I don't really count the second one, a blackberry. I did plant the blackberry in its pot on purpose, but, really, a blackberry doesn't need anybody's help to stay alive, once it's got its claws in some dirt.

Kylee from Our Little Acre said...

Ummmm...do you REALLY want to know?

Kathy said...

Since you say to count each bulb, and I am counting every plant in the household, my count is 25. But if I counted each pot of bulbs as one, the count would be 15.

Jean said...

During the summer it's zero. Right now it's six. If I lived up north it'd probably be more. But I shed most of my year-round houseplants about 15 years ago as I just couldn't keep them looking well enough.

Mr. McGregor's Daughter said...

Jan - thanks for commenting, even though you have fewer than I, the need for truth outweighs my need to be right. (Maybe not by much...) I would like to participate in your sustainable meme. I need to get the banner.

Pam - I counted my half-dead plants, so your total is 4.

EMC - thanks for contributing, and for visiting! I hope your Mandevilla makes it. February seems to be the month of death for houseplants.

Monica - half-dead isn't all dead, to paraphrase Miracle Max, so it's 14 for you.

Thanks for participating, Tina! (I knew you could do it.)

Darla - I don't have any seedlings, so you shouldn't feel bad. And most of the plants in my house spend the summer outside (which is my secret to keeping them alive).

Blackswamp Girl - 15 is starting to look kind of paltry to me. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is having trouble with African Violets. Maybe we're too young for them.

Lisa - I killed the African Violet I had last year. These have been in the house only since November or December, so their chances of making it until spring aren't good. Thanks for participating, I already popped over to your post.

Anna/FGG - I must say I'm shocked, shocked! that you have only one indoor plant. I thought everything you touched sprouted.

Hi, Liz - I'd take your Cyclamen, but that wouldn't be fair to the poor plant. Don't feel too bad about the bonsai, they seem like a lot of work.

Anna - I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't write down the name of the Amaryllis. The tag might still be in the garage, but it's a bit too cold for me to go hunting around in there today. If I find it, I'll announce the name.

Hey, ChickenFreak, it's a plant & it's alive - it counts. You've given me a great idea - I think I'll try growing a blackberry in a huge pot on the patio. I've always wanted one.

Kylee - can you beat Mr. Subjunctive? I really do want to know.

Kathy - if I counted that way, I'd be down to 13. Thanks for participating.

Jean - last summer the only plant in the house here was the Kalanchoe. I think it will also be spending the summer outside this year.

Jim/ArtofGardening said...

Fifteen for me. We're only counting the live ones, right? Still fifteen. Three of which are trees. No bulbs.

Kylee from Our Little Acre said...

Whooeeeee...no! Can't beat that, but thing haven't changed much since I posted this two years ago: You Tarzan, Me Jane . I should take another count, just to see what the number is now.

I have one red amaryllis in full bloom that is gorgeous and makes me look like I know what I'm doing (this is after I killed the first bulb). My only other houseplant is a sickly looking leftover poinsettia that is dropping leaves all over the floor. I even noticed some sort of swarming gnats as I carried it to the kitchen sink to water it tonight.

I sometimes wonder how I can have such a beautiful outdoor garden but I cannot keep a houseplant healthy to save my life.

Thank goodness for those $2.99 bouquets of daffodils at the Jewel!

MMD, your violet looks almost as bad as a couple of mine. I think they are suffering from root rot. So if I include those with 3 healthier ones, a couple of cactus, an almost blooming amaryllis(thaks to Rose), a peace lily, a schefferella(sp), and 2 huge pots of the assorted varieties of house plants, that makes 12 containers. Is that all? Seems like more when I am watering. :) Fun post and interesting to read what all people have.

I haven't had a chance to post about this, but I've only got 4 plants upstairs, a jade tree, Christmas cactus and 2 scented geraniums. Downstairs I have an orchid cactus, 2 more Christmas cactus, 2 rosemaries, a jasmine and an abutilon for another 7. Can I count the two pelargoniums overwintering happily in the basement? And I've got a lot of salad sprouts on the kitchen counter.

Xan said...

Well, for heaven's sake, if I can't count the dead ones...

Anyway, there seem to be 21, which is a minor miracle. Can I count the two apparently dead orchids that I have not given up on? Didn't think so. The miracle will be if any of them make it to spring, when I can put them outside, at which time they will all breathe a sigh of relief at having survived me.

All of them journaled here: http://myfolia.com/gardens/4128-winter-garden

Maybe I can get my act together and join in, MMD - although my amaryllis is no longer lovely - yours is beautiful!

Since you're counting the plants that winter inside my numbers will be up... even more so if the inside of the attached garage (where plants are sheltered from our recent freezes) counts as the house.

Jim - sorry, only the living will be counted. We don't all live in Cook County, Illinois.

Kylee - I can't believe you haven't added a few more since you wrote that post.

EAL - you've made a respectable showing, and I do love your plant room. (the post is here)

Annie - yes, include the plants in the garage. From what I remember of the question, in IL at least, an attached garage is considered indoors.

Dee - thanks for joining in Dee. After you get a greenhouse, I'm sure you'll have lots more.

Laura T. - I feel your pain! I have killed more houseplants than I care to mention. This year is either an anomaly, or I've figured out how to do something right. I'm not sure which.

Beckie - so really, you have more than 15 plants. While your African Violets may be suffering from root rot, mine are suffering from lack of water. I keep forgetting about them.

Carol - I think you might have the oldest plants. Thanks for participating.

Diana - I like your attitude! Thanks for participating. (the link to Diana's post is here)

Commonweeder - sure, count the Pelargoniums in the basement, that's indoors. Someday I'm going to try the salad sprouts.

Xan - if you haven't given up on the Orchids, that means you believe they're still alive, so yes, they count. Here's Xan's link.

At least you kill yours outright. I torture mine for weeks before putting them out of their misery.

I have three at home. One Christmas cactus, these thing are so tough they could live in kitchen drawer, one aloe about the same, and one cutting from a coleus. The poor coleus is still exactly the same size it was in October.

At work where I have more light I have stashed my amaryllis--total of 4 plus one other aloe.

I've often wondered if outdoor gardeners are as into indoor plants. It sounds like some are. I'm very lazy about indoor plants, they usually dry up and die, but I have managed to keep 11 alive for now. One is my lemon tree, the rest have only been here about a year or so most likely their days are numbered :)

Digital Flower Pictures said...

I am guessing we have a dozen or so. The ones I like best are the two 8 foot tall Ficus Trees but they lose a lot of leaves. A lot of clean up.

I have 51!! Thanks for holding the census. I had no idea I had so many -- although some of those are lettuce seedlings destined to wind up in the spring garden. ;)

Still, I'd thought of myself as "not a houseplant" person. Clearly I'm in denial.

Mr. McGregor's Daughter said...

Amy - I'm so relieved you got rid of the fake ones!

Marnie - plant torture? Horrors!

Robin - Unlike other things which need not be mentioned, for purposes of the survey, size doesn't matter.

Catherine - I don't know why it is easier to forget or be apathetic about houseplants rather than plants outside, but I'm also a victim of it. Maybe if the plants were in the way, say, right in front of the fridge, we'd pay more attention to them.

DFP - the dropped leaf issue is a deal-breaker for many people.

Meredith - you're not in denial any longer. It's funny how the act of counting makes it all more real.

Annie - thanks for participating. I thought Texas gardeners didn't do houseplants.

Karen - I hope your olive tree makes it to spring. Have you harvested any olives?

Shady - I'm inspired to add some more next year. Maybe after I get a proper plant stand.

Holy smokes! Lots of bloggers weighing in on this one. So VIS thinks 15 houseplants is too much? Nah, he needs to indulge you some more as houseplants do so much to freshen the air in the house.

I had to go count mine. I have 24 true houseplants, 7 vases/pots of forcing bulbs, and about 60-75 cuttings wintering over in the garage. I can deal with the wintered over cuttings and bulbs but not all the houseplants. As much as I like them they are a pain. Good thing I can kick them ALL out of the house come spring. Interesting question!

Okay: 5 amaryllis, 8 African violets, three kalanchoes, one olive tree, one jade (Crassula) tree, 23 succulents of various incarnations, 5 cacti, 4 geraniums, an Ixora, a cycad, a bromeliad, a cool Dracaena, 3 hoyas, a staghorn fern, a sansevaria, 4 Phalaneopsis orchids, an overwintering Phormium, a fabulous collection of hyacinths flowering their little heads off, one Hedera helix, one croton, one syngonium...and a clivia that may or may not flower this year. Oh, and an orchid cactus. And five Christmas cactus. And two poinsettias I haven't yet put outside for their winter airing.
Wow. That was embarassing.

GardenJunkie said...

Considering that I can grow pretty much anything outside, I just don't understand why I seem to be the Great Houseplant Killer... But I have managed to keep a few alive (so far!), including a snake plant (pretty much indestructible), some kind of tropical plant that sits in the master bathroom and gets frequent showers, a Thanksgiving cactus, a half-dead orchid (wilted leaves with a fake silk "flower" stuck into the pot - looks real enough from a distance), and a philedendron that I've had for over 30 years (I have no idea why i'ts survived so long). So that makes 5 live houseplants. The list would be much, much longer if I included all the dead and dying plants... :-(

3 hibiscus trees/shrubs/bushes (one is six foot tall)
a lime tree
multiple succulents (I went through a phase)

mulitple vines (I am currently going through that phase that started with some free hoya)

of all my plants the ones I have the most trouble with are my peace lily and goldfish, I thought they were supposed to be easy.

I really like Eucharis grandiflorum, a beautiful white flower that takes a while to crowd itself into a pot and then blooms several times a year--always missing major holidays by just a little bit. I pictured it at http://thevermontgardener.blogspot.com/2009/04/happy-easter.html
last Easter.

Amaryllis have always been a favorite too. Here's a picture of one that just finished up a couple weeks back.

Thanks MMD for a great question and some interesting responses.

I counted 142 in my house. It's too much work to count them by category. Most of mine are succulents and cacti. I have a particular weakness for Haworthia. In addition to the succulents I have a few orchids for color, some overwintering coleus, and a triple hanging basket of aphid-food (a.k.a. English Ivy).

Hi, Jenn, thanks for participating!

Sue - I made my own count after reading your post.

Hi, bloominrs, this really has been fascinating.

Tufa Girl - I'm impressed at the blooming tomato. You'll definitely have the first tomato in town this year.

Ken - plants never behave as they are supposed to. Plants that are so easy for some people, I kill, and then I do fine with ones others can't grow. Then there are the 2 different Coleuses that I took cutting from at the same time. One is a big plant now. The other never rooted. Go figure.

Hi, George, I love Eucharis too. I had them in my wedding bouquet as a stand-in for Daffodils. I really should try to grow one.

Cristine Guth - your last minute entry may just skew the results. Time to retabulate.

I'm adding a late entry because I thought this was a fun and intriguing post.

My total is 10 and I wrote about it
here at the 20MinuteGarden.

Hi, I was trying to find out what was an average no of houseplants any one house might have (so I could compare myself!) and came across this census. Did my count and weighed in at around 100 specimens covering about 45 different types. PS I live in a smallish 3 bedroom bungalow in Northern Ireland, the plants are to be found in every room...

I just read your post and have enjoyed the responses of other gardeners. It does sound as though this plant business is a bit addictive and any share they are hiding the real number from others : ). My husband also periodically asks me if I know how many plants I have. Well after reading your note I counted most of them and I have over 200. I have tall ceilings so some of them are over 8 ft. tall and I have lots of windows so everything gets plenty of light. That count does not include what is in the garage "overwintering". I should probably do this commercially as I am definitely hooked - 50 violets alone with most of them in bloom 6 months out of the year. Anyway I enjoyed the read - have a blessed holiday!!!

Annita - A business is a great idea, especially if you're running out of room. I know many offices rent plants that are cared for by the rental company. I'm in awe of your numbers and ability. Happy holidays!
