A Rose in Three Moods

The Rose photography contest at Gardening Gone Wild has given me an excuse to talk about my one and only Rose.  I've told story behind my decision to plant a 'Carefree Beauty' Rose here.  In short, this Rose has it all:  cold hardiness, disease resistance, repeat bloom and a light fragrance.  The fragrance doesn't compare to that of the old French Roses, but it is much better than other cold hardy, disease resistant, repeat-blooming shrub Roses.  I highly recommend this easy to care for Rose, which received no protection other than snowcover when temperatures plummeted to -18F last winter.  There was minimal stem dieback this spring, and now it's a bloom machine.
All my photos are closeups, as the garden and the Rose were installed last year, and I'm not finished with it yet, so it doesn't look that good in long shots.
Here is a typical sample of the photos I've been taking of 'Carefree Beauty' this June. It's not backlit at all, nor are there shadows, because sunlight at dawn and near dusk has been a rare thing around here this June.  And yes, that's rain on the foliage.
I can't remember if this is dew or rain, but I'd bet on the latter.
Finally, and most surprisingly:it's backlit!

This is a fabulous rose, MMD; we have one here, but it isn't as exuberant as yours is. My roses are only just starting to bloom, (a few of them) but are promising quite a festival after I pruned them HARD this spring.

MMD, you know how I am about roses! And this is a beauty. These types, while being wonderfully carefree often aren't very showy. But this one is a keeper in all departments. I love the 3 shots, especially the backlit one. Good luck with the contest.

Beautiful photos of one of my favorite roses. You know how much I also love 'Carefree Beauty.' Here, it's time to deadhead her. Yours looks in the prime of her first bloom season.~~Dee

Very pretty rose. I love the ones that don't take a lot of fussing over. As soon as our roses bloomed here the rain started...pretty typical.

My only rose right now is a miniature one in a pot. This one sure is pretty! The second photo is my favorite.

What a beautiful rose, MMD! The raindrops make for a lovely photo, but right now I'd prefer more of those backlit ones on sunny days, too:)

I'm really glad to see these photos. I planted Carefree Beauty last spring but have had any bloom yet. Right now the buds are swelling and if we ever get sun I'll get to see what I've got. I entered the contest too, with photos of 3 of my 70+ hardy roses. I just built a Virtual Rose Viewing page, too. Come visit.

MMD, That is truly a beautiful rose. Does it bloom enough to bring a few blossoms indoors? Are you finally able to wind down a bit after Spring Fling??

Jodi - my Rose is still a baby, but I expect great things from it next year.

Beckie - thanks, but I didn't enter to win, just to show off my one, measley Rose.

HM - it felt as if I had to wait for weeks to get that shot. The rain has made the Rose happy at least.

Gail - Roses definitely are shown to best advantage in the closeup.

Dee - by now the biggest flush has gone by, but there are still some buds in this cycle.

Connie - don't even mention the rain!

Sue - I'd love to have a mini in a patio pot for easy sniffing with a glass of wine.

Rose - I don't know what's worse, rain & 60s or sun & 90s. I tend to think the latter.

CW - I checked out your Roses. They are wonderful.

Shady - I rarely cut flowers to bring indoors because I'm allergic to mold. I also hate to deprive the garden of a single bloom. This week I finally get to relax a bit, thanks.

Nice rose. Sounds like just my type! They had better be disease and pest resistant around here or they won't survive.

I'd wish you luck with the contest but I want to win the container! Great photos, though.

I had to laugh about your comment on not liking to deprive the garden a single flower. I don't bring them in much, either. It's partly because our horizontal surfaces get too full, and it's hard to find a good place for a bouquet. My husband has some pollen allergies. Mostly, it's your reason. LOL I do cut flowers for drying, though. I did plant some globe thistle in the veggie garden so I can harvest those for drying, and not take many from the plant in the flower bed.

I think you will love this rose. It is so easy to care for and blooms for a long, long time. Very rewarding!

I stand beside you in praise of this 'beauty', MMG ... I've been enjoying a parade of several, dancing down a hill for over 25 years! Stay cool in this oppressive heat & humidity ... I'm wilting in the garden.
