Tree Peony Watch: Day 2 - The Long Wait is Over

The Tree Peony is in bloom!  Yesterday saw the first bit of color in the bud. Watch the bloom open over the course of today:
While it took only 24 hours to make the transformation, the wait to see the bloom of this Tree Peony was one day short of two years.  Last year it was loaded with buds when an unforecasted frost zapped them all at the end of April.  I've been hyper-vigilant this year, with a sheet at the ready.  All that effort paid off.
I purchased this plant sometime between 2001 and 2003 as Paeonia suffruticosa 'Kamatanishiki.'  It first bloomed in 2006, and, shortly thereafter, I realized it looked nothing like 'Kamatanishiki.'  (But see the 'Kamatanishiki' at Dirt Therapy.)  I've concluded that it is 'Ofuji Nishiki' a Rockii Hybrid.  (Rockii hybrids have dark flares in the center of the blooms.)  I like it even better than 'Kamatanishiki.'  This plant is the diva of Squirrelhaven and worth every bit of the trouble.  Does your garden have any divas?

MMD, I love that you were so excited that you took photos throughout the opening of the flower. It is breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you for that great slideshow!! :-)

That's a diva worth pampering. She's beautiful!

Beautiful to a degree that might almost be illegal. Congratulations!

So glad your peony bloomed--it is magnificent, MMD! Love the slide show, seeing that first bud transform into a lush flower.

No divas here, except for maybe a couple hydrangeas. I tell them when they're planted they have to pull their own weight; I don't have time to pamper them:)

MMD - What a beautiful tree peony, by any name. And I loved the slide show. I'm on blossom watch myself. The Boule de Neige rhodie opened yesterday, but Guan Yin Mian doesn't look quite ready. I'm on duty though.

Absolutely beautiful. I was going to say I was the only Diva in my garden--but Anna stole my thunder! Oh well, great minds think alike! ;-)

So so beautiful and what fun to get a time lapse view of the opening ceremony. It's a good reminder too for me to make the little trek down to the Rock Garden today - I'm hoping they won't decide to bloom over the weekend while I'm distracted by my own garden!

The time lapse was magical, thanks for taking the effort to make it possible.

I have lots of divas at The Havens. But isn't every blooming plant a potential diva? Right now the clematises are putting on an amazing song and dance number out on the privacy fence. I have no tree peony, but the bush one out front is gorgeous. I'm featuring it in my post today. Must be peonyday.

Definitely worth the wait! Divas here? LOL, just the gardener on occasion. Seriously, the tree peony is blooming yellow in my garden right now. Last year no flowers, this year three. Now you know how exciting it is here on a long weekend.
