A Grand Day Out at the Chicago Botanic Garden Part I

Carl Linnaeus

Spring Fling's first official stop was the Chicago Botanic Gardens, located not in Chicago, but in beautiful Glencoe, Illinois, a North Shore suburb.  It's nearly impossible to see the everything at the CBG in a day, and I didn't even try.  I've been here many times before.  I used to be a member when the kids were small and enjoyed a day out in the stroller here.  So it was fun to experience it fresh with friends who were visiting it for the first time.Frances, Gail, Shawna, Chris, and Monica wait for the tram tour to begin.
One of my favorites places at the CBG may seem surprising:  the vegetable garden.  But the CBG elevates it to an art form.It was funny how many of us bought a salad at lunch.  I wonder why?More from the CBG in the next post.

For Part I of Spring Fling, click here, Part III is here, Part IV is here, and Part V is here.

I'm not surprised you liked the vegetable garden. They show how it can be done to provide both beauty and sustenance!

The RR garden was my very favorite but those viola/parsley towers were to die for.

Oh those towers are fabulous, MMD - and all the posts and tweets have been terrific! Guess the Botanical Gardens just keep getting more beautiful.

I can't help noticing how different the setting for the Linnaeus statue looks when compared to it's appearance 20 years ago. On the off-chance someone wants to see an old photo I posted a 1988 Linnaeus at Annie's Addendum.

Oh! You've been having such a fun time... and meeting all our favorite people! I'm still moping about not being able to be there, but I did go out "flower-shopping" today! :-)

Carol - I'm going to be trying to recreate some of that in the front next year. I just wished the kids liked cabbage!

Annie - thanks for posting that old photo (it makes me feel old, as I remember when the statue looked like that). Now, you can't climb up there next to it; it's fenced off.

Shady - come to Chicago this fall & I'll take you to the Botanic Garden's prairie, which looks its best then.

Dee - it was my pleasure.

MMD, we missed the vegetable garden! Beckie and I decided that we just HAVE to come back to visit the Botanic Gardens. This is a place that needs a full day or more to see everything.

It was so wonderful finally getting a chance to meet you; if we do make another trip up to the Garden, we'll be sure to contact you to see if we can meet up. Thank you so much for your hospitality, for inviting us into your garden and taking us to Rich's. This weekend was one I won't forget!

Hi MMD, Thank you for making this trip to Chicago so special and thank you for your gracious hospitality. Your garden was delightful and wild! You know I like wild gardens. I loved the CBG and hope to get back there to see the prairies in bloom. gail

Hi MMD, it was a blast! Those veggie gardens and everything else at the CBG was first rate. So much fun at your house too and food fun at the restaurant. Thanks for showing us a good time.

Wow... I love that veggie garden, too! Do you happen to know what kind of lettuce those red heads are in the last photo? I keep looking for pretty lettuces to plant...

Beckie - you're welcome. It was wonderful to meet you. I was nervous about having visitors to the garden, but you were all so nice!

Rose - I'd love to visit the Botanic Garden again with you two. You're welcome, you were wonderful guests.

HM & Katarina - they made a convert out of me. Now if I can just convince my husband to let me rip out the front lawn...

Gail - You're very welcome. You must see the prairie in September if you can, or August or October.

Frances - I have a feeling that you don't need to be shown a good time, you seem to bring one with you.

BG - the lettuce is Merlot, which, coincidentally, I'm growing for the first time this year.

Gorgeous photos! I LOVE the rannuculus as well. Wish I knew how to grow them! Thanks for sharing for those of us who weren't there.

That's a great photo of the statue of Linneaus. I saw Annie's first and it was very interesting to contrast then and now.

The Impatient Gardener - to grow good Ranunculus, get a greenhouse. Keep it cool, but not too cold. Start them inside early. At least that's how the Chicago Botanic Garden does it.

MSS - things have really changed at the Botanic Garden in recent years, but the Heritage Garden hasn't, structurally. Things have just grow up and filled in. I'm glad she posted the "before" photo too.

Wow, your front yard would make an awesome place for an ornamental edible garden a la Rosalind Creasy! Go for it!

Cindy - reality has just struck - I have deer in my front yard. I'd have lots of empty beds with tiny bits of salad strewn about. There goes that idea.
