Today I read about a magazine called
Garden & Gun, which claims to speak to the "Soul of the South." At first, the title struck me as an oxymoron. I just couldn't imagine any of the gardeners I know picking up a gun to shoot innocent animals. And then I thought of two reasons why a gardener would pick up a gun:

I received that magazine just to find out what the heck! Interesting title. I did find some well written articles and few gardens. Since it has a Southern tone, I let it lapse. I can't imagine what marketer thought up that name.
If I liked to eat venison or rabbit I might consider hunting. Many around here hunt and it seems natural to me. Hunting for survival is a way of life in many places on earth and it is 'local' food. Happy New Year to you and yours.
LOL, two of your favorites:)
Let me add two more-squirrels and chipmunks!
I saw this magazine at the dentist office & the title struck me funny too. :) Those would be two great reasons to bare arms in the garden, lol. Along with the two Tina added of course.
...oops, and I meant to add, it's not only in the south. people are people no matter where ya go...north, south, east & west:)
Oh, yeah. I understand how I might feel the desire to take care of deer and rabbits in the garden! :-) I'm not a gun-toting person, so I just scare them away the best I can! ha.
I do understand scratching the head and trying to understand what seems to be a contradiction in terms! However, I can't worry about what someone else does (unless it affects me or someone I care about). I have enough to do when it comes to being responsible for my own actions. ;-)
I must subscribe immediately. Do you think it's possible to get teeny little hand guns to take out snails? (Are you feeling lucky, mollusc?) Or perhaps a miniature machine gun to deal with aphids and spider mite?
I have heard of this magazine before. The title has really had people talking if nothing else.
The word Verification today is
canhe. Ha...
Never heard of the magazine, my husband keeps his BB gun handy to keep the squirrels out of our pear trees though.
LOL!!! Where is my gun? I have to admit I love that magazine. Beautiful photos and great articles. Silly title. BTW, we have guns, but no animals have died here lately. Target shooting only.~~Dee
Hi, MMD--Have to say that as often as I'd like to strangle a deer with my bare hands, I wouldn't shoot one (I'd miss anyway). My brothers are hunters, their wives are vegetarians and animal rescuers--takes all kinds. But no guns at our place--
Funny! I can just see you with a trowel in one hand and a shotgun in the other!
Somehow I knew when I saw your post title this morning that rabbits would be involved:)
I agree, though, that the title is an oxymoron. No matter how much these critters may annoy us, most gardeners seem to me to be peaceful people who love all wildlife--as long as they stay far away from our gardens!
Hi MMD, so funny. Well not funny really, something is already eating emerging foliage and my sweet peas as the germinate outside. I have put chickenwire up, and dryer lint in case it was snails, I love Victoria's idea!, to no avail. It's gonna be a long battle. I do think this is a literary mag named for an actual club somewhere in the south, was it Charleston?

Layanee - I'm actually a supporter of deer hunting. They have no predators (aside from the ones with 4 wheels & an internal combustion engine.)
Flydragon - they're definitely on my "hit" list.
Tina - I almost posted a photo of a squirrel, but I'm feeling a bit generous right now. We have a chipmunk, but it's so elusive, I've hardly seen it and I doubt it's done much damage. I blame the squirrels for anything it's done.
Perennialgardener - there's nothing like chomped plants to bring out the violence in a gardener's soul.
T42D - I don't find bibles & booze an oxymoron, but then I'm Catholic.
Shady - my "weapon" of choice to chase off the squirrels is a broom or a yardstick. I haven't actually hit one (yet).
Victoria - that sounds like excessive force!
Lisa - it's hard to stand out from a crowd. These folks have certainly found a way.
Darla - isn't that what BB guns are for?
Dee - you are too nice to your deer!
Cosmo - sometimes I think of taking up bow hunting. Guns are too loud for me.
Beckie - and I'm such a pacifist.
Rose - I so enjoyed watching the Loony Toons marathon on New Year's Day. I got to see the Wagner/Valkyrie "Kill the Wabbit" cartoon.
Frances - already the wood goats have come calling? If it's warm enough, start spraying the stinky stuff.
Dear MMd,
Thanks for the great laugh! and I bought one copy of the magazine to send to my sister and brother in law (Illinois mind you). She gardens and he hunts! It was not for them! More for the horse set!
Gail
I have a gardening friend who lives in Frankfort, and he's been known to do some backyard hunting. He's very fond of squirrel and rabbit stews! :0
This magazine would be right up his alley.
Gail - I'm glad you liked it. I bet they'll find it amusing. I've good things about the articles, but I definitely don't belong to the horsey set.
Gardengirl - more power to him! There's no way I could skin & cook the critters, even if I do occasionally feel like taking a pot shot at them.
LOL--I like deer and rabbits just fine. Now groundhogs and ducks, well... it's a good thing they're too cute to shoot! (I don't own a gun, but I sometimes pretend I do!)

Hello! I was wandering around, and came across your Garden and Gun post...I'm in Charleston, where the magazine originates (more or less) - and 'Garden and Gun' was the name of an club in Charleston years ago - a very popular (and supposedly very crazy) place. I've talked with some folks who used to go there - the place had a bit of a cult following for locals. As would be expected of Charleston, the title is an 'inside' joke, so only understood by locals. I've lived here for 14 years now, and the place is still a mystery to me - as is the title of 'Garden and Gun' to most! I don't subscribe to the magazine, but I must admit that I love to browse it when I'm in Barnes and Noble.
ps I got my Plant Delights catalog last week - boy, of all the catalogs, that one gets me the most - I just love it.
MMD - What a hoot! I'll have to track that down somewhere and look at it. Sounds fascinating. And I loved how you popped those pictures in there for your two reasons! Made me LOL.
HA HA HA HA! Awww, poor bunnies. (I still like them)
LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!
