Instead of dwelling on the injustice of squirrel depredations, I just added the pumpkins to the compost pile a little early. I guess I can't blame the little critters for trying to fatten up for the winter, even if the Squirrelhaven squirrels never have to worry about going hungry.I feel a lot like the squirrels, enjoying the bounty of nature and never worrying about from where the next meal is coming. I try not to take such things for granted, knowing there are people around here who will be going hungry this winter. Before we dust off the Christmas decorations and hang up those lights, let's all take a moment to count our blessings and give thanks for them.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Are you sure that's the culprit? He looks so innocent:) Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Ha! Little thieves they are!
Yes, the squirrels at Squirrelhaven have much to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy T-Day, MMD. Sorry the vandals got to your pumpkins--ours are pelting us with acorns when we walk under the wrong tree (THAT seems just wasteful to me, especially since no squirrel has been harmed or even to my knowledge startled in our 8 years here). Hope the squirrels don't find your pumpkin pie. Best, Cosmo
OMG that is to funny! I have several on the front porch, but so far they have let them be. Atleast he got his thanksgiving meal.
Ingrates! No kind word for the squirrels here either. Do have a wonderful holiday this Thanksgiving, despite the rotten furry tailed rats. :-)
Frances
Happy Thanksgiving MrMCD. I am sure those squirrels are very thankful too.
Was it You, MMD, that had the squirrels eating the pumpkins from the inside out last year?? ;-) Happy Thanksgiving to you! (The meme was deleted forever, but that's okay.)
How very true. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
MMD,
Have a wonderful holiday with your family and friends...
Gail
The squirrels are surely saying thanks for those Halloween pumpkins. Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Oh, MMD, I'm SURE that cute lil squirrel wouldn't have eviscerated your pumpkins. Must have been roving packs of pumpkin seed bandits. Yeah. That's what it was. Happy Thanksgiving to you, even without pumpkin decor!
Sometimes I feel sorry for them, most of the time....well, I try to be nice!
Happy Thanksgiving MMD!
Shirley
Your squirrels do look healthy. I always leave the pumpkins out for our squirrels. They seem to enjoy them so. Usually all that is left is just the outer skin.
We do get wrapped up in our own little worlds and forget to be thankful don't we. Even if it's not much, we have more than others and need to appreciate that.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
I just threw one jack o'lantern out into the compost--it was looking a little too fiendish for Thanksgiving.
So true, MMD; tomorrow my family will all be sitting around complaining about how they ate too much, and I will be pushing them to take home leftovers at the end of the day. All the while, others are depending on the kindness of strangers for a warm meal. It's a time to count our blessings and to make sure we don't forget the less fortunate this season.
Happy Thanksgiving to you!
Flydragon - I recognize the modus operandi here. I suppose a raccoon could be responsible, but I prefer to blame the squirrels.
Zoe - yes, as you've seen 1st hand.
Carol - all of us here at Squirrelhaven have much for which to be thankful.
Cosmo - you've got some wicked squirrels!
Rhonda - I should have known better, as they started attacking one just after I carved it.
Frances - the squirrels act like they own the garden & I work for them!
Lisa - I can just imagine the squirrels thanking me for providing such goodies for them as Crocuses & Violets.
Nancy Bond - thanks!
Gail - I'll do my best. Hopefully everybody will be healthy enough to go to Thanksgiving dinner.
Pam - thanks!
Jodi - if only they were roving! Instead, they seem to have set up camp here.
Shirley - I used to feel sorry for them, but that was before they started attacking plants and pulling down birdfeeders.
Beckie - you are too nice to your squirrels. I'm sure mine are enjoying their feast from the compost bin.
Rose - I hope your family has plenty of blessing to count.
Just think how grateful you will be when it comes time to use that compost. We gardeners have a lot to be thankful for - squirrels included! (They make for such great stories). Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi, nice blog!
I love Thanksgiving day very much. I found a site with a lot of things about Thanksgiving. Maybe this will interest you: All about Thanskgiving Day!!! :)
MMD, The Summer 2008 Inspiration Meme has been revived (albeit a little more simply) and I'm linking your Rose post to it! ;-) Thanks!! SG
Hey,
I think that same culprit has been at my house. My pumpkins look the same. Had I been closer the other day, I could have had a picture of a squirrel inside one of the pumpkins eating from the inside out.
Have a wonderful evening...Thanksgiving is winding down here and we are ready to veg out.
Hope you had a wonderful time MMD!
They are such frenetic little creatures. I can watch them all day long. Happy Thanksgiving!
MMD, I now have a story to relate! My daughter, her husband and their two little ones were at our house for Thanksgiving. C related a story about the pumpkins on their front step. They recently awoke and went outdoors to find what must have been total havoc during the night. Their pumpkins had been totally destroyed! (Squirrels). Must be those town-type squirrels that go ballistic! :-)
The word for today was micinest... nope. I think they were squirrels... the damage couldn't have been mice making a nest. ha!
Here here. It's great that you don't begrudge anyone having enough to eat. God provides for us all, doesn't he?
At least your pumpkins weren't completely covered with mold and soft and nasty like mine were when they made their way to the compost pile.
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Hi, Kris - the squirrels give me plenty of stories, so I guess I should be grateful for the entertainment value.
Foxy Lady - thanks for visiting!
Shady - I'm glad you revived it.
My MIL told me yesterday that she had to throw out her Thanksgiving pumpkins because a black squirrel attacked them. I suspect a widespread squirrel conspiracy. It definitely wasn't the mice - they're all too busy trying to figure out a way to get into my basement.
Balisha - even if you were closer, I doubt the photo would have turned out. It would have been blurry from you laughing!
VP - Thanksgiving was great. It was the first time in 4 years that I've had my mom's meat stuffing.
Layanee - I bet Tucker likes to watch them too!
Cinj - actually, the pumpkins were pretty nasty & had to be carried very carefully.
Ha! That happens to me every year. What is it about the squirrels? They keep on taking as you keep on giving. :-)
