came roaring through Chicagoland yesterday morning. Non-stop winds were clocked as high as 68 miles per hour at O'Hare Airport and 88 miles per hour over Lake Michigan. It's a good thing there wasn't much snow with this nasty wind storm, or it would have been a blizzard. The wind wouldn't have been so bad had the temperature not soared to nearly 50F on Saturday, melting all the snow and thawing the ground. The result: my arbor blew over! The damage? Cotinus 'Nordine' lost a major branch.
I didn't take a photo of the fallen arbor because I was too distressed and not quite fully awake. I was out there in my PJs and robe getting the arbor back up. Amazingly, neither free-standing trellis fell. I chalk that up to the rebar pounded into the ground on either side of each trellis and attached by velcro. At least I've got these decadent confections of my own devising to cheer me up, "Little Balls of Comfort & Joy."
They're chocolate and booze - what's not to like?

Oh, that's so not fair! Your poor Cotinus. I'm glad your arbor wasn't broken, anyway. Never mind--after you eat all of the chocolates, it won't matter so much. Merry Christmas!
Oooh... I would like some of those "Little Balls of Comfort & Joy!" Yum. :) Glad to hear that your arbor went back up just fine, and that the freestanding trellises were okay. Merry Christmas!
Nan & Kim - thanks! It's hard not to overreact when 1st confronted with damage. The shrub will grow, the arbor can't, so the damage could have been much worse. TGFC! (Thank God for chocolate)
That was some wind storm wasn't it ? My old house was rock'n'rolling. Sorry that your arbor blew down !
What's your address again ? Did you say that those were " Southern Comfort " chocolate balls ? I'll be right over to help you eat them. That way we won't worry too much about the windy city.
Carolyn Gail - yeah, it's hard to believe that the moniker "Windy City" doesn't refer to the weather when we have days like that. I may have to rename my little truffly things. They're made with Frangelico, not Southern Comfort (I am Italian). They would be good with SC though.
late dropping in to visit, thanks to frustrations in the evening with my internet connection--or with Blogger--or with both! I'm sorry that the wind did such damage to your place! I understand, because we're blowing galeforce winds most of the time, it seems, and things have to be tough to withstand the climate.
Your little balls of comfort and joy look delicious! I hope despite the weather you had a happy Christmas.
Jodi - thanks for your good wishes. Christmas was remarkably good this year, no major kid meltdowns. I live near the bottom of a hill, so that we normally are somewhat sheltered from the wind, unlike your place.
MrMcD, I see why you asked if our arched arbor is in something. It does have a bit of concrete in the holes we put it in. It is also very deep in the ground. At least two feet. Thank goodness becasue in the wind we had night before last it would have ended up in the kitchen if not. Have you since put rebar in to hold your arbor? That sounds like a good solution if you can't put the legs into the ground deeper.
