October 2007 Bloom Day

This is my Bloom Day post a day early because of Blog Action Day tomorrow. For a list of blogs participating in Bloom Day, check out May Dreams Gardens.

There are definitely fewer things in bloom this month. There are still a few flowers on Aster Novae Anglia/Symphyotrichum novae-angliae 'Hella Lacy,' but it is nearly done. There is a solitary bloom of Phlox paniculata 'Laura' left, and a couple of flowers of Lobelia 'Monet Moment' hidden in the foliage. Still blooming strongly are both Tricyrtis and there are a few blooms still on the Ceratostigma plumbaginoides. In full bloom now are the mystery Monkshood, Aster tartaricus, and Aster laevis/Symphyotrichum laevae 'Bluebird,' seen here with Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium).

From the "Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking" category are both hybrid Anemones 'Andrea Atkinson'
and 'Party Dress,' shown here with a pink Lamium maculatum (yes, it's a groundcover Anemone),
as well as Phlox 'Natasha,' Geranium nodosum 'Svelte Lilac,' and Geranium 'Rozanne.'
New this month is a pass-along mum. More on my ambivalence about this plant later.

What would we do without asters in our fall gardens? And I'm looking forward to read more about your ambivalence toward mums. Thanks for joining us again for GBBD.

A groundcover anemone? Hmmmm. I need to investigate this!

You had snow last year on October 12? That sure was early!

Snow in October? Reminds me of when it snowed on my birthday when we lived in Colorado. My birthday is in mid-June. Too late -- or too early, as the case may be!

I have two pink 'fall' anemones. I am liking them better and better, because they are tough, they bloom late in the season, and they spread!

HA! I am so stealing that to describe the droopy 'Party Dress'... "groundcover anemone" definitely fits. But she's so pretty sprawling through your lamium and my golden oregano anyway.

Carol - I so agree about asters. I think I need some more.

Dirty Knees - I try to put a positive spin on things. Yes, last year was just as weird as this year, only in the opposite.

Healing Magic Hands - that's why I will never live in Colorado. It seems like they tend to get snow in October every year.

Muum - I agree, Anemones are great.

Blackswamp Girl - steal away. I'm happy to be able to add to gardening lexicon.

Nice to see what our 'Andrea Atkinson' will grow up to look like. More than a resemblance to 'Honorine Jobert'? I love your photo of the hardy geranium. I should buy more.

Ki - I think 'Andrea Atkinson' is supposed to be shorter than 'Honorine Jobert,' but with all the rain we had this summer, it grew very tall. BTW, you can never have too many geraniums!
